IT'S  A  STATE  OF  EMERGENCY

From: Apostle Steve Allen

Those were the headlines that greeted us when we opened our newspaper and read The Sunday Times this week in South Africa.  Under the headlines it read "more than 30,000 foreigners displaced and thousands flee South Africa."

Flames of Hate

Pictures of a man in flames, kneeling in agony on a street in Ramaphosa informal settlement, confronted the world on television and on the front pages of many newspapers this week.  The images of this poor Mozambican man's horrific death by burning at the hands of a rampaging mob of South Africans was too much to bear.  The years of hard work, of reconciliation, of goodwill and international acceptance went up in flames along with his flesh as the rage, heartlessness, and loathing of our fellow Africans was laid bare for the world to see.  His crime was that he was a foreign man who had a job in a country where many others can not find work.  This poor soul from Mozambique was beaten up and then had petrol poured all over him.  He was set on fire while still alive and the picture of him struggling to his knees in flames will haunt the world for decades to come.

In addition, hundreds of other foreign nationals carrying bewildered children and hastily snatched possessions started leaving Cape Town and other major cities in droves as neighbors stripped bare their homes and shops in an orgy of looting.  Thousands of homeless people desperately sought shelter, food and clothing, while those with the means boarded buses and trains to start a long and painful journey back home.

Why is this happening?  Why is South Africa officially the most xenophobic nation in the world ( according to a World Values Survey, South Africans held the harshest views on foreigners among all nations surveyed )? Yes, the influx of foreigners into South Africa has mushroomed in recent years especially influenced by the meltdown in Zimbabwe, our neighbor to the north.  And yes, jobs are scarce and wages sub-standard, but that still does not explain these happenings in a nation that should be intimately acquainted with the ravages of prejudice and violence.

I can't help but believe that the answer is spiritual and rooted in a demonic assignment against the prophetic destiny of South Africa.  Even in the natural, this nation has deemed itself the "rainbow nation", a place where all races, peoples, tribes and colors can live as brothers in peace and harmony.  Those of us who God has moved here believe that what the Holy Spirit is doing in South Africa is pivotal to the continent.  This is nothing more than the rising again of that ancient spirit of racism and hatred that held this country in bondage for so many years.  Listen to these scriptures:

" When a stranger resides with you in your land, you shall not do
him wrong.  The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as
the native among you, and you shall
love him as yourself; for
you were aliens in the land of Egypt. "
Lev. 19:33-34

" Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow. "  Deut. 27:19

" How long shall the wicked exalt?....They crush thy people, O Lord,
and afflict thy heritage.  They slay the widow and the stranger, and
murder the orphans. "
Ps. 94:3-6

" For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat;  I was thirsty,
and you gave me drink;
I was a stranger, and you invited me in. Matt. 25:35

These are just a few of the many scriptures that express the heart of the Lord for the foreigner and the stranger in our midst.  Not only that but Is. 2:2 declares this promise...

" Now it will come about that in the last days, the mountain of the
of the house of the Lord will be established as the chief of the
mountains, and will be raised above the hills;
and all nations will
stream into it.
Is. 2:2

Looting

Again we see that as the Kingdom ( mountain ) is established, then all nations flow towards the Kingdom.  The heart of God is clearly for the nations and He calls us to represent Him in his love for all nations, tribes, and tongues!

Therefore, we can not just quietly shake our collective heads while such evil is being perpetrated here in South Africa.  I'm appealing to everyone who reads this letter to please pray and intercede for South Africa at this critical time.  Perhaps you would even feel to  fast for one day this week.  It would be awesome if your church body could pray corporately and come into agreement this coming Sunday for a miracle of God's intervention.  If you feel led, will you send me an email to say you are praying and in agreement with us for a miracle?

Let me close with these thoughts.  I was a teenager in 1963 when the world was shocked by a picture of a burning Buddhist monk who had set himself alight with petrol in protest against the war in Vietnam.  This act etched itself deeply into the psyche of the world and had the desired effect of alerting many to the hideous nature of the Vietnam war.  Then, in June of 1972, the newspapers of the world carried front-page images of little nine year old Kim Phuk running naked in terror and pain down the dusty street of her village in Vietnam.  Kim was running for her life and her bare back was in flames from the napalm dropped by American bombers onto her remote jungle village.  These two photos changed the thinking of many.  Now it is South Africa's turn.  Last week the world reeled in shock at the photograph of a 22 year old Mozambican.  I pray that his death will not be in vain but will lead to a radical awakening in our country.  Until then, we can take solace in the words of little Kim Phuk who survived her burning in Vietnam and later wrote:

" It was the fire of bombs that burned my
body.  It was the skill of doctors that
mended my skin.  But it took the power
of God's love to heal my heart. "

South Africa finds itself in a similar place.  It was the evil  of apartheid that tragically wounded the national soul.  It was the courage of those who fought for freedom that allowed hope to rise.  But only the power of God's love can heal and unite the heart of South Africa today.

                               PRAY  FOR  AFRICA
